Kendall Oil Lecture A comprehensive understanding of synthetic engine oil additives

There are more things in your oil than in the eyes, and in the following Kendall Oil Knowledge course, we will learn more about Kendall’s choice of additives to ensure that Kendall All-Synthetic Oil meets the most extensive engine conditions and Driving requirements play a role.

We interviewed Dr. Jonathan Vilardo, director of Phillips 66 lubricant research and development at Kendall’s parent company. Jon has more than 17 years of experience in various technical and commercial functions, supporting lubricants and fuel additives. Jon obtained a Ph.D. in Metal Organic Chemistry from 1995 from New York State University GENESEO Chemistry 1999 Purdue University BS.

Jon shared details on the chemistry and benefits of various additives, including their Kendall-type fully synthetic engine oil. The results show that as many as 8 to 12 different additives are blended into Kendall oil to combat the presence of various forces and by-products in internal combustion engines. In addition to factors like thermal visibility (thermal breakdown) and wear (metal-to-metal contact), Kendall chemists have to meet the rigorous API requirements to get their API “Donuts” and ILSAC (International Lubricants Standards and Certification Board) Starbucks seal indicates that consumer Kendall oil meets the stringent industry and OEM performance and test criteria.


We never thought oil was “backward compatible” software, but Jon pointed out that Kendall had to make the latest, fuel-efficient, popular engine that worked equally well in the past with low-tolerance, low-compression engines. This is a huge challenge, but Kendall did a great deal of testing by achieving and exceeding that number.

Jon went into the API that we must approve before we challenge Kendall’s synthetic oil formula. In five different engine dynamometer tests, performance tests were performed every 40 hours to 216 hours to meet the most basic industry requirements for “candidate” oil formulations. If only one test fails, the candidate formula must be modified and the test begins again. It’s like going to a marathon, and if you have to stop and fasten your laces or take a break, you have to start over! Kendall’s newest fully-integrated 0W-20, 5W-20, 5W-30, 5W-40 and 10w-30lubricants adhere to piston deposits, sludge and corrosion control, containment and fueling provided by the ILSAC GF-5 and API SN standards Economic.
